Learning Common Geoguessr Metas

March 25, 2026

I recently reached a milestone on Geoguessr on my birthday this past Saturday... playing for 200 days. It might not look like it at first if you go to my profile, but I am currently at level 53, having played 165 classic games with an average score of 20773. I have also played 41 streaks game, with my highest countries streak literally doubled my US state streak, 58 and 29 respectively. My only multiplayer game is the daily challenge, of which today is my 204th day playing. I have not played a single duel and I haven't played or hosted a party game (though I have played a party game hosted by a streamer twice before). Most Geoguessr players play the game to test their skills against other players, but me? I'm more of a slow-paced learner. Of course, you really don't need to play a lot of classic games before you can play duels since it's available to you upon a pro subscription purchase.

So why Geoguessr? My first passion is math. My second passion is geography. This game combines the two (the math portion is from my own spreadhseets). While most players use Google Sheets, I use Microsoft Excel to record my games -- writing down scores and the locations used in those games.

That brings me to today's blog topic: Geoguessr Metas. There are a lot of resources out there to learn various metas like (i.e. Plonk It), some more important than others. Yesterday, I wanted to start diving into Indonesian Kabupatens and Brazilian area codes. The former is crucial to get good scores on Indonesia as they appear on signs, perhaps significantly more than the provinces they're in. The latter is also crucial to plonk in the right state in Brazil.

Other metas I want to learn are Russia (as a whole) and US/Canada area codes. I'm playing US state streaks today and these area codes are everywhere in these locations. I am currently at 29, so I'm hoping to get at least 40 locations correct. As for Russia, it's a hugh country (much larger than the US) so antennas, area codes, and the steering wheel location are useful metas.

Overall, it's a great game to learn about the world without actually traveling, but they always say... it's not the same as having experienced it, so if you want to play Geoguessr, it's USD$36 a year to use all the services available, like explorer mode, duels, and team duels. However, there are free options available, like Openguessr and Worldguessr, so you should check these out too.
